Turnlock fasteners are a type of fastener used to secure inspection plates, doors, and other removable components of an aircraft or other machinery. They are also known as quick opening, quick action, or stressed panel fasteners. What makes turnlock fasteners so popular is that they provide the capability of quick and simple removal of access panels for inspection, repair, and maintenance purposes. Turnlock fasteners are made by many different manufacturers and have different names and applications throughout various industries. Three of the most commonly used turnlocks are Dzus, camlock, and airlock fasteners.
The stud assembly is an important factor in the function of these fasteners. In the case of Dzus fasteners, the stud is integral in locking the fastener in place. These fasteners consist of three parts: the grommet, receptacle, and the stud, which lock the fastener by turning clockwise. It can be unlocked by turning the stud counterclockwise, or by a special tool called a Dzus key. This is similar in cam lock fasteners, which also implement a stud to lock. Unlike the Dzus fastener, these cannot be unlocked with a key, but only by turning the lock counterclockwise. Airlock fasteners feature a stud with a wider hole for a cross pin to fit.
