About Epson
Seiko Epson Corporation, most often referred to as just “Epson”, is a Japanese electronics manufacturer that is most widely known for their computer printers. Seiko Epson has a long history dating back to 1942, marking the establishment of Daiwa Kogyo, Ltd. Initially, the company focused on the manufacturing of watch parts, and they operated out of a small miso storehouse. The following year, the company established a factory to increase their manufacturing capabilities.
In 1959, Daiwa Kogyo merged with the Suwa Factory of Daini Seikosha, forming Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. After this merger, the newly formed company would go on to develop the world’s first portable quartz timer, the first quartz watch, and the first automatic power generating quartz watch. In 1961, the company established Shinshu Seiki Co. which would focus on supplying precision parts for watches. During the 1964 Summer Olympics, Shinshu Seiki Co. produced an electronic printer for timing events, and this marked the start of the company’s printer history.
In 1968, the company released the world’s first mini printer which was called the EP-101, and this led to a line of Epson series printers and the establishment of Epson America Inc. In 1982, Shinshu Seiki renamed themselves the Epson Corporation, and they soon released the world’s first handheld computer and portable color LCD TV. Later, in 1985, Epson merged with Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd., forming the Seiko Epson Corporation.
During the early 2000’s, Epson became a publicly traded company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and they continued to acquire multiple companies to expand upon their manufacturing capabilities. In the present, Epson is focused on the development of new technologies, taking interest in sectors such as smart glasses and more.
