Aircraft Jet Engine Parts
The jet engine is built up on many different parts, which are placed together in an intricate system that can take hours for maintenance workers to put together to pull apart. These parts consist of but are not limited to air intakes, subsonic inlets, supersonic inlets, turbines, compressors, fuel systems, propellant pumps, turbopumps, ignition, lubrication systems, and more. Fan and Air Intake
Some of the major components of the jet engine are the inlet (sometimes called the air intake), and the compressor. In regards to the former, the air intake is a duct which is required to ensure smooth airflow into the engine despite air approaching the inlet from directions other than straight ahead. In terms of when this can occur, it is during flight while yaw and roll are happening. The compressor or fan, on the other hand, is produced and made up of different stages. Each stage consists of rotating blades and stationary stators or vanes. As the air moves through the compressor, its pressure and temperature increase. The power to drive the compressor comes from the turbine, as shaft torque and speed.
Afterburners and Bypass Ducts
With bypass ducts, maintenance workers and those working installation can deliver the flow of the fan with minimum losses to the bypass propelling nozzle. What this means is that the fan flow may be mixed with the turbine exhaust before it enters the single propelling nozzle. In another arrangement an afterburner may be installed between the mixer and nozzle. The afterburner, sometimes also called a reheat or mainly military reheat, can provide extra thrust by burning fuel in the jet pipe. This reheating of the turbine exhaust gas raises the propelling nozzle entry temperature and exhaust velocity. The nozzle area is increased to accommodate the higher specific volume of the exhaust gas. This maintains the same airflow through the engine to ensure no change in its operating characteristics.
