Important Points To Keep In Mind When Using Nylon Fasteners

Nylon fasteners are steadily growing in popularity in many industries for their diversity of uses and applications. Among the most commonly used products for nylon hardware are polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acetal, and polypropylene. Nylon fasteners offer many advantages to manufacturers of electronics and other industries. One such advantage is that it has great insulating properties as well as being highly resistant to corrosion. They are also approximately half the weight of aluminum while still providing excellent wear and tear resistance. Despite the many advantages of nylon fasteners, there are also important things to consider when using them.

First, nylon fasteners and other nylon-based products should not be used in engineering applications and processes. In general, nylon fasteners are not durable or reliable enough to be used in applications that require a significant amount of strength and resilience. As such, they should not be used in the mining, highway, railroad, and building construction industries. Second, nylon fasteners are not suitable for use in boating or marine applications. Nylon is hygroscopic, meaning it very easily absorbs water from its surrounding environment. If nylon fasteners get wet, they will become swollen and deteriorate at a rapid rate.

A third thing to consider is that nylon cannot be exposed to extremely high temperatures. Nylon fasteners’ service temperatures should not exceed 121 degrees Fahrenheit, and therefore cannot be used in the construction of ovens or other equipment that will be heated during operation. Lastly, it is important to consider that nylon does not have the same UV and chemical resistance that other types of plastic do. This means nylon fasteners cannot be used in areas where they will be exposed to prolonged sunlight. When exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, they will turn yellow, become brittle, and deteriorate to the point that they are unsafe to use. There are many advantages to using nylon fasteners, but you must first consider the applications they are and are not suited to.
