An airlock fastener is a fastener that consists of a receptacle, stud, and cross pin. The stud connects to the access panel where it is held in position by the cross pin. The receptacle is affixed to the panel frame via a rivet. These rivet heads must be flush with the outer surface of the panel frame to operate properly. When replacing airlock receptacles, it is important to drill out the two old rivets and attach the new ones with flush riveting. There are two common types of airlock receptacles - fixed and floating. The floating type is preferential for simple alignment of the stud within the receptacle. Similar to the airlock fasteners is the Dzus fastener. This fastener also comes in two types, one for light-duty and one for heavy. Light-duty Dzus fasteners are used on box covers, access hole covers, and lightweight fairings. The heavy-duty fasteners are used in cowling and heavy fairings. The main difference between the two types is the presence of a grommet in the heavy-duty configurations.
